FAQ’s

Is it Confidential?

Yes. I will not share details of what we talk about unless you or someone else is at serious risk of harm.

Will you talk to my parents or my school about me?

Even if you need permission to attend counselling, what we actually discuss during our sessions remains private. I will not ‘report back’ to your parents or school. The only time I may need to speak to someone else is if I felt there was a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case I may need to speak to another professional or if applicable (and safe) your parent or guardian.

Can I talk about anything?

Yes. There are no rules or limits on what you talk about. It’s ok if you feel confused and unsure of what your feelings or worries are, counselling can help you to figure these things out.

Information For Parents and Guardians

It can be very upsetting to witness your child experiencing stress or worries during their teenage years. Counselling can be a valuable support and outlet for young people experiencing these kinds of problems.

When your child comes for counselling, my relationship will be with them as my client and therefore to protect their privacy and autonomy I will not relay the content of our sessions to you. If there is a risk of serious harm to your child or others then I will take steps to safeguard those involved as appropriate. Otherwise it is important to let your child be in charge of their own counselling experience. I will work with your child as a whole person and not a ‘problem’ to be ‘fixed’, just as I would with an older client.

It is important that your child has a quiet and private space for our counselling sessions so as much as possible please help them to provide this by limiting household noise from appliances, devices, pets and siblings. If feasible it is helpful if the rest of the family remains on a different floor (upstairs or downstairs) so that your child can feel more confident being able to talk without fear of being overheard. Headphones are also useful to help block out external noise and maintain focus during the session.

If you are experiencing your own stress, anxiety or other worries it is important to take care of yourself and seek your own method of help or support. You may even decide you would like to try counselling for yourself, however to avoid any potential conflict I am unfortunately unable to see parents of teenage clients for their own counselling. In this case, I would be happy to refer you to another counsellor should you wish.
