Online Counselling is an alternative to having a face to face session with a Counsellor at a designated location. Instead sessions take place Online through a secure Internet Platform either by Live Video or by Live Chat Message/Messenger. Counselling can also take place by email (asynchronous Counselling) where an agreed number of email exchanges take place during an agreed time.
What are the Benefits of Online Counselling?
Convenience is a huge benefit to Online Counselling as it means that you can access sessions with your chosen Counsellor without having to factor in travel time. There are also other reasons why you may choose to have Counselling online;
You do not live in the local area but wish to choose me as your Counsellor- Clients from further afield have requested Online sessions where they do not live within reasonable travelling distance of Tring or Aylesbury and I am pleased to be able to open up this service.
Chronic illness or Physical impairments make it difficult for you to attend conventional sessions- Travelling to Counselling premises may not be practical, advisable or helpful for everyone but this should not preclude them from being able to access Counselling. If illness makes your health and energy levels unpredictable then Email sessions may be a useful option as you do not need to commit to an allocated time slot.
You are a frequent traveller- Many of us travel extensively for work purposes or simply as part of our lifestyle which would make attending regular face to face sessions impractical. As long as you have a private room and a good internet connection you can maintain a therapeutic relationship by having Online sessions.
Limited Childcare- New and Single parents may find it difficult to regularly leave the house to attend Counselling. Although there are certain limitations and considerations , Online Counselling can be a practical solution for parents seeking emotional support. Email Counselling can be a particularly useful solution as it allows you to choose the time that you send and read the messages without the need to commit to a specific time.
You are a Counsellor or Counselling Student of the same Modality- If you are a Person Centred Counsellor or Counselling student you may be seeking a counsellor who is trained in the same way of working and wish to see someone who is not local to avoid any boundary conflicts or simply to broaden your choice.

How Does it Work? (Video & Live Chat)
Once you have decided to book an Online Counselling Session you will receive an email explaining all the details of how to use the service as well as terms and conditions. Our Online Sessions will take place via doxy.me which is an online conferencing service similar in use to Skype. Because it is specifically designed for online Client and patient appointments it has a higher level of security and encryption to protect your privacy. You do not need to download any software to attend our online appointments, you can simply click here to enter my online waiting room or click on the button below. You will also receive the link in your welcome email. You are welcome to click these links at any time to check your connection and to get used to the online waiting room. Actual sessions will only take place at our agreed time therefore please be aware that when clicking the link at other times there will be no response.
Email Counselling (Asynchronous messages)
Counselling by email provides another option of receiving therapy and accessing a therapeutic relationship. The benefits to email counselling are that you do not have to be at your computer at any set time and can choose when to write according to your own needs and schedule. Writing down your thoughts and feelings as they occur rather than having to wait for your session can be a beneficial way of unloading some of your mental burden and relieving stress. If you find it useful to express emotions through poetry you may also wish to communicate in writing that way in part of your emails.
When you send me your email I will respond within 48 hours but it is useful to consider whether you feel that waiting up to 48 hours would feel comfortable and or safe for you. Please note that Email Counselling is not suitable for those in crisis (extreme levels of distress or psychological disturbance or actively suicidal) due to the delay in receiving a response. If you are currently in crisis please call Samaritans on 116 123.
Once we have arranged to work together by email we will agree on a start date to begin Counselling, this is usually the beginning of the next day although it does not have to be. Agreed start dates are the beginning date of our email exchange and begin at 12:00am (Midnight) on that date. You may send your email at any time of day within 72 hours of that date. I will then send my response within 48 hours of receiving your email. If you wish to arrange a further session or have booked a block of 4 we can then arrange a date for the next session in a separate email afterwards (there is no cost for administrative emails for purposes such as arranging appointments or updating details).
Email Counselling will be conducted through a secure email service which means that our messages will be encrypted to prevent anyone accessing them via the internet. I use a Protonmail email address for this purpose, it is advisable that you also use a secure email address and it takes just a couple of minutes to set up a Protonmail account and is free of charge. For those not wishing to have a separate secure email address you will receive my emails to your inbox password protected to prevent anyone else from opening them on your computer or device. Although it may seem overly cautious, confidentiality in counselling is extremely important to ensure confidence and safety. For example you may not be happy for your partner or child to see our emails, however in a normal inbox-particularly if you use an email app it would be extremely easy for them to accidentally open an email on your phone or tablet when browsing for something else.
